Alaska Air Cargo Finally in Good Conditions

Alaska Air Cargo operates some 737-700s that have been converted to freighters.  For some reason, I feel like I have struggled to get any good shots of them.  I have either been too distant or the weather was crummy or I just made a bad job of the shots.  They operate in and out of SEA daily so you would think that, after six years up here, I would have got something of them that I liked.  Finally I got a bit more lucky.  Some afternoon departures to the north on days when I could be there and the light was cooperating meant I was able to get something better.  The -700 is not a big jet so, even with the 500mm, I was stretching things a bit but winter light makes everything better.  If only the Cargo logo wasn’t hidden behind the wing for a good chunk of the time.  The low light does make the texture of the door conversion on the front of the fuselage show up, though.

FedEx Skycourier Arrival in the PNW

Late in 2022, an interesting arrival came to SEA in the form of a Textron Cessna 408 Skycourier.  I had seen my first example of this plane at Boeing Field as it transited from Alaska back to Wichita.  That had been a crappy weather day and this was no improvement.  This was the first example to show up in the region in the colors of FedEx.  I am not sure whether it was delivered or just coming for familiarization with the local operations but it was using an Empire call sign and Empire is the local operator of FedEx feeder services.

It was due in later in the day and the weather was already looking bad with low cloud and the possibility of snow.  It was also a little behind schedule which didn’t help.  The light disappears early in December and it is a lot worse when the weather is bad.  I was waiting watching the ISO levels creeping upwards.  Meanwhile the cloud was creeping down.  A couple of planes came in and then a few jets started making missed approaches including the British Airways Heathrow arrival.  I then saw the Skycourier change course.  I thought it was heading to the inner runway instead.  I made a quick move down the street to that location and checked again and now it had switched back left.  I had a frantic return to where I had been and it transpired that they were actually going for the middle runway.  I hadn’t even considered that.  This meant they were a bit far away but not as bad as it could have been.  Light was terrible so ISO was cranked up high.  Was it worth it?  They will be very common here before too long but that’s not the way my brain works apparently.

Strange Cargo Door On This 747-400F

I caught this 747-400F departing from SEA one weekend while waiting for something else.  It is an original freighter rather than a converted passenger jet so it has the small hump and the nose door.  However, when I was editing the shots, I noticed that the rear fuselage cargo door has blocked windows on it.  This had me curious.  Is this a door that has been swapped on from a converted passenger aircraft or did the doors all have windows for some reason?  That seems unlikely so I am leaning to the former solution but anyone that is an expert on these things, please let me know.

Air Canada Special Early Sunday Departure And Lightroom Masking Options

Air Canada brings a pair of A220-300s in to SEA each evening – one from Toronto and one from Montreal.  They leave the following morning with the Toronto flight heading out early and the Montreal flight following a couple of hours later.  The Toronto flight one weekend was the TCA special aircraft so I decided to head out and catch it departing.

The day started very overcast and gloomy but there was a sign that things were going to get better.  This did happen but things were still not great when the jet departed.  The light had improved a bit but the cloud was still there.  When looking at the shots, I figured it was time to make use of the masking options that Lightroom offers.  The latest update has improved their usability somewhat.  First I drop the exposure of the shot overall to get the sky looking roughly how I want it.  Then I select the aircraft suing the Subject option.  It does a pretty reasonable job but I do then refine it with an addition brush to bring in the bits it has missed and a subtract brush to take out the detail areas where the mask has overlapped.

The new option is the click on this mask and choose the Duplicate and Invert option.  This gives me a sky selection that matches what I have got for the aircraft.  For the sky, I can work on the white balance to bring it back to something more cool which suits the overall look of the shot.  I can similarly work on the white balance for the jet to make the reds pop more in the livery.  The exposure can be brought up a bit with the shadows helping a little while bringing the blacks down while improve the contrast.

All of this is pretty straightforward.  One nice feature of the latest update is that you can actually apply the same settings to multiple images.  The brush adjustments are not going to work well for this so it is best to do the overall selections and sync to the various images and then, if a shot is worthy of further work, the refining of the mask can be done afterwards.  If you know which shot is the best, you can just focus on that one.

Tunnel Of Rebar

I was down on our project site having a look at the progress that is being made.  Most of the large columns for the elevated sections have already been built but one more needs to be done later than the others because it goes where a temporary road had been placed.  They are now getting to it and the rebar has been put together that will go inside the column to reinforce the concrete as it is poured and sets.  Looking through the tunnel of this rebar as it sat on the ground awaiting the pour, I loved the pattern that it formed.

SR99 Bridge Over SR509

WSDOT is in the process of building a new part of SR509 that will connect I-5 to the rest of SR509 on the west side of the airport.  The alignment that the new road is taking cross SR99 at the same place that we are currently building the light rail extension.  To avoid making life too complex, WSDOT funded Sound Transit to build the bridge for SR99 that is needs as part of the light rail construction program.  The contractor diverted SR99 around the work site and then excavated the area where SR509 will go.  A new bridge was built over this and then it was all filled in underneath.  The road then was laid on top of the new bridge.

Since these pictures were taken, the road has been re-opened.  However, at this tie, they were finishing the pours of concrete for the new bridge and too tie it in to the existing roadway.  This view is now gone so it was a narrow window to see the bridge.  I was lucky to see it at various stages of its construction.  In due course, WSDOT’s contractor will come in and remove the earth under the bridge and build the SR509 roadway.  That will happen pretty soon.

Alaska’s New Star Wars Jet

Airline sponsorship deals around the Star Wars franchise are a big deal these days.  I have shot a variety of them over time.  The United Rise of Skywalker jet recently got repainted back in to standard United colors.  Alaska Airlines has signed a new deal associated with the Disney park attraction and they unveiled the jet after it had been painted in Spokane.  I missed its initial visits and then got it one weekend but only in some pretty dingy conditions.

Then I got a second chance at both the arrival and departure one morning when the weather was far more favorable.  The airframe is mainly black with a variety of graphics across it.  There is a graphic of a porg in a location that is designed to look like a front window.  They are also on the winglets.  I find that creature annoying so don’t have much interest.  However, the addition of Tie Fighters and the Millennium Falcon are better from my perspective.  I guess that shows my age.

Views Of The Ramp At SEA

The new international arrivals facility at SEA includes a long walkway that overlooks the ramp between the A concourse and the South Satellite.  I was able to get a few shots as I wandered through there.  A Delta A220-100 was taxiing by when I got there and there was another shortly afterwards.  They are pretty common here these days.  Since A Concourse is heavily used by Delta, no surprise that a lot of their jets were present.  A few Southwest jets were over on B with some widebodies on the satellite.

International Arrivals Facility Trial

Anyone that has arrived in Seattle on an international flight will know that the arrivals facility was a bit cramped and unwelcoming.  The airport has been building a new arrivals facility for a while now.  It was supposed to open a while back but got delayed by a variety of things, not least COVID.  The new building has been built alongside the A concourse in the main terminal with a bridge connecting the South Satellite to bring arriving passengers across.

The whole thing is due to have a soft open in April 2022 and be fully open by May.  The airport requested volunteers to come and help test the systems to see how they handle a volume of people.  You can do a variety of tests but the true test is when a load of people show up.  This is still not going to be as much load as it will get when multiple international flights arrive at the same time but it is part of the process.

I volunteered to take part.  Yes, I was happy to help out but I was also keen to have a nose around the new facility.  I was hoping to get to see the new bridge and the view it provides of the ramp area but was to be disappointed.  Everything we were testing was on the A concourse side of things.  We did have a good view of the new bridge though.

We were given assignments for our run through the arrivals procedure.  We had various elements that we needed to engage with and evaluate.  I was arriving on a flight with Emirates and had to connect to a Delta flight.  I needed to collect one piece of luggage and then clear immigration and recheck my luggage.  At two locations, we had to complete surveys based on what we had experienced. We started at a gate waiting area and then entered the gate to turn on to the route an arriving passenger would take.  The route is alongside the ramp area so you get a great view of the airport as you walk through.  The new buildings are quite airy and spacious and very white!

Most things worked well enough.  A few things could do with tweaking and it will be interesting to see whether the areas that got backed up for us will cope when the real passengers show up and staffing is increased.  Hopefully it will be a lot nicer way to arrive in SEA than was previously the case.  I would avoid it in the first few days since I imagine there will be some teething issues but, after that, it should be a welcome change.

Shooting After Sunset

For a while, I had been thinking about trying to do some night photography of airliners.  I had seen some good shots people had got but SeaTac does not have a lot of ambient light to illuminate aircraft flying overhead.  It would be better if there was a large public space under the approach that would provide so brightness to work with.  I was down at SeaTac to pick up a colleague and knew I would be there as the sun went down so I decided to have a go at some shots.

I used the 70-200 f/2.8 to get as much light as possible.  The sun was going down so I was going through quite the transition of lighting conditions.  Some were just twilight while other were when things were getting quite dark.  The autofocus was also struggling since the center point was being used and the underside of the jet lacked much contrast in the dark.  I still got a few usable images.  The lack of light means they aren’t too great but it was fun to try something different.  Now to find a better location!
