Sensor De-mosaicing and Southwest Colors

I have been pondering the way in which the method by which digital images are captured is affected by what is being photographed.  As part of my workflow, I render 1:1 versions of the images and then quickly weed out the ones that are not sharp.  This needs you to be able to see some detail in the shot that shows whether the sharpness is there.  I have found that, if a Southwest Airlines 737 is in the new color scheme, something odd happens.

Digital image sensors actually capture one of three colors.  Each pixel is sensitive to a certain color – either red, green or blue – courtesy of a filter.  They colors are arranged on the sensor in a pattern called a Bayer pattern.  The camera then carries out calculations based on what the pixels around each location see to calculate what the actual color should be for each location.  This process is known as de-mosaicing.  It can be a simple averaging but more complex calculations have been developed to avoid strange artifacts.

When I photograph the new Southwest scheme, something strange occurs around the N number on the rear fuselage.  It looks very blotchy, even when every other part of the airframe looks sharp and clear.  I am wondering whether the color of the airframe and the color of the registration digits are in some way confusing the de-mosaicing algorithm and resulting in some odd elements to the processed image that weren’t there in real life.  If any of you have photographed this color scheme, can you see whether you had something similar and, if you did or didn’t, let me know what camera you were shooting with so we can see if it is manufacturer specific or not.

The Unusual Oakland Approach

Over the last few years I have flown in and out of Oakland more times than I can recall.  It has been my transit point for the majority of my travels.  A recent return brought me a new experience there though.  The airport is in two halves.  There is a main runway alongside the bay which is used by the airliners and is often the departure runway for the bizjets.  Then there are two further runways that are over near the old airport infrastructure.  These are used by light aircraft and for the arrival of bizjets.  (There is another intersecting runway but that doesn’t factor in this story.)

The normal approach brings you across the shoreline and over the water on the approach.  The other runways are on a different alignment and the approach comes over the local towns. I was looking out of the window and filming a hyperlapse.  I was a bit confused as I was seeing bits of San Leandro that I don’t normally see and we didn’t pass Hayward Airport.  We continued to descend over land and it was pretty clear we were not heading for the normal runway.  Sure enough we touched down on the old part of the airport prior to taxiing back and all the way across through the freight area back to the terminal.  I watched jets depart from the runway we had just landed on as well as from the normal runway so I have no idea what was going on.  I doubt I will experience this again anytime soon.

Trying to do Something Different with a Southwest 737

AE7I9870.jpgIf you want to go with a rather easily achieved photo, a shot of a Southwest 737 would seem to be about as common as they get in the US.  I was staying in a hotel near Midway recently and, after dinner, I decided to see if I could get something a little different to my normal shots of a plane I spend a lot of time sitting inside!  I wasn’t hampered by some rather helpful weather conditions.

AE7I9950.jpgI was close to the approach path so I wandered off to find what line worked best.  My best results came from two spots.  One was directly on the flightpath.  The other was slightly offset to one side.  At this location, the planes are just short of the field so are pretty low.  I include a couple of shots that show the rooflines of some of the houses to give you an idea of the surroundings.  The shots from under the nose are interesting but there is only so much you get from that angle.  I was pleased with a few of the, but I did not spend a lot of time in this spot.

AE7I9526.jpgBeing offset provided a more interesting angle.  I only had one lens with me so I was a little limited in what I could try by having a longer focal length.  Being full frame does now give me a bit more width at the short end of the zoom though.  Therefore, I could get some shots from almost underneath that provide a slightly more dynamic angle.

AE7I9890.jpgSince it was evening, the light was getting better and better.  What certainly helped was that there was a hint of storm activity in the distance and some clouds were bubbling up.  They made for a far more interesting backdrop than the empty sky.  Overall, this was a pretty satisfying evening.  I did get some other arrivals that while I was there and I will possibly give them their own post at some time.

Texas One Retires (for now)

AE7I0650.jpgI saw online this weekend that Southwest Airlines had retired Texas One, a jet painted up in Texas colors.  Texas One is a 737-300 and Southwest is accelerating the withdrawal of the 300 Series jets.  It flew out of Dallas to a facility that will break the jet for parts.  By coincidence, I happened to shoot this very jet the day before when it arrived at SFO.  I had no idea that it would be at the end of its career.  Nice surprise.  For those that like the colors, fear not.  I hear that Southwest will be painting another jet in this scheme before too long.

Pulling a Cloud With You

AU0E1411.jpgGetting shots of vapor is a popular thing when shooting fast jets.  An airliner on a damp day can also result in some clouds being formed.  While shooting something special at Oakland, I was getting a few shots to make sure the light metering was working as planned.  A Southwest 737 came in and, as it flared for landing, it had a nice cloud of moisture form over the wing.  Normally these things pop up further out on the approach and don’t make for a good shot but this one was close at hand.

Hyperlapse Oakland Approach

I was a sitting by the window on the approach to Oakland and decided to play with the video functions on my phone.  I have shot video clips a number of times of the approach but it takes a lot longer than you realize and makes for a very dull video without editing aggressively.  Also, the turbulence when handholding a phone means the video is very jerky.  Instead I switched the phone to time lapse mode and pointed it out of the window.  The result is an accelerated version of the approach.  The bumps are smoothed out by the compression of time and the maneuvers become more aggressive.  I let the thing run until we are at the gate since that provides a more natural finish point.  We spent a lot of time facing the water as we descended which is a bit less interesting than I would like but you can see that we are getting closer quite quickly.

The Tennessee Jet Joins Southwest

AU0E1486.jpgSouthwest have a program of painting some of their jets up to represent states that they serve.  One of the most recent additions to the fleet is a jet painted for the state of Tennessee.  Having announced that the jet was joining the fleet, I decided to keep an eye out for it if I should be in a position to get a shot of it.  Fortunately, I was in Oakland when it was due to depart.  I popped along to the departure end of the runway to await it.  It was scheduled on a flight a short while later.  Another departure was due to go first so I figured I would shoot it as well in order to make sure that everything was working with my camera settings.  Another Southwest takeoff is otherwise not too special.  Imagine my surprise when they had switched the jets around.  My practice turned out to be the Tennessee jet.  Consequently I got the shot.  If I had been waiting for the planned flight, I would have been sitting in the car when it took off.  Lucky break and a good example of the benefit of not sitting in the car when something is happening!

Skywest Races Southwest

AU0E5056.jpgI like having more than one airliner in one shot as you have probably figured by now if you read the blog a lot. Since SFO has parallel approaches, getting this type of shot is not a rarity although you do appreciate it when it works out. In this case a Skywest Embraer E175 (operating for United Express) and a Southwest 737 were lined up on the approach. They were offset a bit so their relative position from my viewpoint changed during the approach which provided a nice variety of compositions.

Late Runway Change for Southwest

AU0E1708.jpgSFO controllers are known to make some late runway changes for the arriving aircraft. The two runways are very close together to the sidestep maneuver required is not too drastic but it is still not necessarily something the crews want to deal with. A Southwest 737 was on approach and passing near us on the shore when it apparently got the change instructions. We got a sudden topside view as it turned towards us followed by a reversal of bank as it straightened up on the new runway. Compared to the average arrival, this was quite a bit of excitement! Also, if you look closely, you can see another Southwest jet in the background that had just departed.

AU0E8351.jpgSpending a lot of time traveling on Southwest flights means I am pretty familiar with their fleet. Normally I get a 700 series jet which means decent sized bins and wifi.   Occasionally, I get lucky and have an 800 series which has a nicer interior (although the window spacing is wider which isn’t so good). If my luck is not so good, it will be a 300 series. There are still plenty of these in the fleet. Some have had the bins expanded but many still have smaller bin space. Definitely no wifi on these guys.

AU0E8385.jpgThe other week, I had something I have not had for a while. A 500 series jet! These are smaller than the rest of the fleet and are disappearing fast. The interior is certainly not modern with old style seats and small bins. Not an ideal interior for a busy flight. I should be disappointed to get one. However, they are going away quite quickly so this might be the last time I get to ride in one. If so, I’m glad I got one last shot but I certainly won’t miss them.
