Thunderbirds and the Missing Pylon

A discussion on Facebook between a few people I know recently turned to a discussion about the USAF display team, the Thunderbirds. While I can’t now remember how ended up the way they did, at some point, there was discussion about the time the Thunderbirds touched in mid-air with one aircraft losing part of the wing tip missile rail. This occurred at the Chicago Air and Water Show and I was there that day.

At the time, not many people knew anything had happened. Indeed, for a while they flew on before pulling out of the display routine and orbiting overhead and then eventually returning to Gary to land. No-one on the ground had any idea what was going on. I did not capture the contact between the jets. However, when I looked through my shots afterwards, I realized I had a shot of the four ship formation with one aircraft missing the rail and another showing some signs of damage on the tailplane where the rail had impacted. Below is one shot to prove they started out intact!

Sunken Barge

Shortly before I got to Chicago, I had heard that one of the barges on the river had sunk. Apparently, there was a loud crack from the barge and it folded up before sinking. One end of the barge was left still sticking out of the water and I couldn’t resist a quick walk across to see how it had ended up. I have no idea what progress has been made salvaging it so if anyone knows, please add a comment letting me know the final outcome. Thanks.

Backstreet Bar

While out at night in Chicago, I came across these place. It is actually the backdoor to the bar and it has a more obvious entrance on a well lit street. However, something about this entrance looked so much more interesting and slightly suspicious so I couldn’t resist getting some shots.

After a year away, I had a trip back to Chicago for work. I did have a little spare time to do some walking around on the day I arrived and then again one night after work. All of these things will have been in previous posts at some point but it was fun to roam around so I will share a little of what was there.

Erickson Flashback

I was recently looking back through a few of the previous posts and came across some images of Erickson Aircrane at work in Chicago with their S64 Skycranes. I was thinking about the various times I had worked with these guys and it occurred to me that several of those lifts had taken place before I started the blog. Therefore, today is a gratuitous chance to look at some older helicopter shots.

The guys at Erickson have carried out many lifts in the Chicago area. On one occasion, they did two lifts in one day on opposite sides of the city. The first was down near Hyde Park with some equipment being lifted onto a residential block. The loads were lifted in a park area in front of the building. Lots of trees were in this park and the Skycrane did an excellent job of finding the weakest and dead limbs. By the end of the job, the ground was covered in dead wood!

The second lift was in Oak Park and was from a garage structure up to the roof of the building. however, next to the garage was an older building with a wooden roof and balconies which had lots of stuff stored on them. After the morning, we were rather worried about how much stuff would be damaged. Amazingly, the gentle breeze from the street made the downdraft totally benign and the building was unharmed. I shall be a touch self-congratulatory here and celebrate something good that happened to me. Rotor Magazine held their annual photo contest and I entered a picture in the category Helicopters at Work. I am happy to say I won the category. The picture was in the edition of the magazine for Heli-Expo and was on show at the event itself. Many thanks to the guys at Midwest Helicopters. It was one of the shoots with them that the shot came from. I hope they are as glad as I am!

If you are searching through the TV listings for something to watch, take a look at Strip the City on the Science Channel. There are a number of episodes from different cities but take a look at the episode about Chicago. One part of the show features the bridges across the river and they include the Michigan Avenue bridge getting jammed open when the weather was too hot.

If you are a regular reader of this blog or a subscriber to my YouTube channel, the footage might seem familiar. Have a look here and you will see what I mean. This is one of a couple of projects where my video footage has been used. I guess video is a useful addition to the portfolio!

Surely Not More Window Cleaning

I imagine you are wondering how many posts I can get out of the theme of window cleaning. Well, here comes another one. I think this will be the last one though, not least given our departure from Chicago. This time I found myself looking down as a couple of guys were heading out over the edge of the building roof to clean another line of windows. Watching people descend the side of the building is one thing but the first step over the edge always seems more precarious.

Additionally, the guys attach their lines to something solid on the roof. However, I was not so impressed by the choices they were making. Hooking on to an air conditioning unit did not seem quite as solid as whatever I would choose to base my survival on.

The team from Helinet was in town recently as part of a movie shoot. With the end of the shoot coming up, I was asked to get some shots of the helicopter in the city. Alan knows exactly what he is doing when flying in amongst the city buildings and can put the helicopter wherever I wanted it for the images. We even got lucky with some great weather. (The following day, it was foggy and no go at all!)

With some advance planning and some good communication during the shoot, we were able to position the helicopter to look dynamic in amongst the buildings. It would have been good to get some video too but time was limited and stills were required so that is what we did. A fun shoot and great people to work with.

Trump Views

I watched the Trump Tower being built a few years ago since it is directly across from where we were living. Aside from a visit when the spire was being completed, I hadn’t been in again since. I then was asked to carry out a shoot from the terrace on the 16^th floor so ended up checking out the view. The 16^th floor is a long way from the top of the building but its terrace has a great view of the river and surrounding area.

I was able to get a few local shots while waiting for the shoot to start and then once it was over. Having seen this terrace out of my window for years, it was nice to finally be there. I probably should have gone at some point but I finally made it just before leaving the city. One more thing checked off the list.
