Delta/LATAM Comes in After Dark

Delta picked up a few ex-LATAM Airbus A350-900s as part of that airlines restructuring during the downturn in the airline business caused by the pandemic.  They went initially in to storage and then have been progressively moved to Singapore for updating to the Delta configuration.  Seattle has been the location for them to come through on their way to Asia.  I have missed a few but one was due to come through when I could see it.  Sadly, it departed a little late from Victorville and was showing due in after dark.

Since it was an unusual movement, I figured it was still worth the effort.  I would use the 500mm since it has a wider aperture and test the low light capabilities of the camera to the full.  It still meant some very low shutter speeds but I let the tech compensate for my low skill levels.  I was pleasantly surprised by how well some of them came out given the lack of light.  Since this shoot, I did also reprocess with PureRAW3 and this improved the quality of the shot further.

Shooting at SEA After Sunset

One of the things that photographers that have only used digital cameras can’t appreciate is ability to shoot in low light conditions.  When I was shooting film, you were already struggling with image quality with ISO 400 film.  Early digital cameras got very noisy as the ISO got ramped up but, these days, the capabilities of shooting in very low light are truly amazing for those of us that are old enough to remember what it was like.  ISO1000 black and white film was adventurous!

Now I feel quite comfortable trying all sorts of silly things.  I had gone down to SEA one evening to try and get a departure that was possibly going out just before sunset.  Sadly, it didn’t play ball and the sun was gone by the time it headed out.  However, I was there and the camera can do silly ISO numbers so why not.  It still needs to drop the shutter speed down quite low but, with a fast burst rate, the chances of getting a reasonable shot are not bad.

I figured I would play around with shooting departure shots as the last of the light was fading away.  It was more about trying something different rather than aiming for the perfect shot.  I did have some interesting planes to play with but also plenty of Alaska 737s.  The  light was pretty dim  and ISO51200 is quite something to work with but the image quality is really very impressive considering what conditions you are shooting in.

Team USA Delta A330

Delta was the official airline of the US Olympic team during the Winter Olympics in China.  They painted one of their A330s with Team USA colors.  I knew it had been in and out of Seattle a few times but I had either not had a chance to go and see it or it was in crummy conditions.  Finally it was due in early one weekend morning so I headed down to SeaTac to catch it.  The forecast was not great but I had a feeling that the early sun might hang around and, for once, I wasn’t wrong.  The light was generous and the plane came in on the right runway to get a good shot.

Qatar World Cup Special

The IAero 737 had diverted me to SEA but it also meant I was there when the Qatar 777-200LR was due in on its regular rotation.  It was a special painted up to celebrate the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.  (I don’t think we need to discuss Qatar hosting the World Cup, the timing of the event or the way in which the facilities have been built.). It was an overcast day which is not ideal for the colors of this plane against a grey sky but I think I was able to get something out of it.

Stormy Arrivals and Go-Arounds

My trip to get the G600 on a rainy Saturday meant a little time to shoot some of the other arrivals.  The conditions were incredibly variable.  It was hammering down at some points and then sunny for a little while before raining again.  I shot a few jets twice as they got to the threshold before going around and having a second go at it.  The Alaska Cargo 737-700BCF was a lot better the second time.

One of the jets broke off the approach before it even got too close.  Looks like the crews were earning their checks that day.  As an aside, I had a tree fall a short distance from me while I was shooting these arrivals.  There was a loud cracking noise and then the tree gently fell to the ground.  First time I have seen that.

IAero’s Old Southwest 737

I diverted my Sunday outing (not far admittedly and I wasn’t under any pressure to be anywhere at a given time) when I saw that an IAero 737 was coming into SEA.  This is a 737-300 which means it isn’t too common anymore.  There was a time when these things were everywhere.  Southwest had tons of them and this example was one of theirs.  The conditions were a bit overcast so not ideal but with the sun angle being on the nose, having some cloud made things a little easier.  They were bouncing around on short final.

Return of the G600 Testbed (In The Rain)

A rainy Saturday afternoon had very little going on except the return of a G600 test aircraft to the Pacific Northwest.  I have no idea why Gulfstream has not painted this jet but it is still in primer.  I half expected to see it had been painted when it arrived, but it was still green.  The conditions were alternating between torrential rain and patches of sun.  Indeed, the sun was out five minutes before the G600 arrived but, no surprise, it was back to rain by the time it came in.  When conditions are like that, I go with a heavy overexposure and then pull things back down in post.  Hopefully, before too long, I will be experimenting with a new body, and we shall see whether I need to modify my exposure techniques in bad conditions.

A First Encounter With Ukraine’s Workhorse

There are some aircraft that have been built and flown in huge numbers which it is almost embarrassing to admit that you have never photographed.  One such aircraft is the Antonov AN-12.  This was a ubiquitous military transport for the eastern bloc and, while it is now a rather aged design, it still has a good role as a civil freighter.  However, I have never seen one in action until recently.

A Ukrainian registered example from CAVOK Airlines was coming in to Seattle.  It was due to arrive at around 1pm which meant the light would be right on the nose.  The worst possible case.  Of course, that was assuming that there would be light.  When it actually arrived, the sun was well obscured by clouds.  Given the dark colors of the plane, maybe that was a good thing.  Two minutes after it had gone, the sun was back out of course.  It was trailing smoke from its old generation engines but it was definitely a highlight of the last few months of movements.

Sun Country Pumpkin Scheme

Sun Country changed their livery design a while back going with an orange based scheme known as the pumpkin livery.  I hadn’t shot one before – I’ve got their older colors and also the Transavia hybrid on leased jets – but it was due in shortly before the National A330 I had gone out for so I was happy to get the bonus.  It’s a garish livery, for sure, but it makes a change from the steady stream of stuff we see normally.

A National Airlines A330 Comes to Town

Seeing that a National A330 was coming in to SeaTac one evening, I figured I couldn’t pass it up.  Sure, they don’t come here often but they are also one of the few airlines that has a relatively interesting livery.  Plus, it would be later in the day when light should be good so why not go?  With SeaTac you always wonder whether the heavies will come in on the outer or inner runway.  Fortunately, there was a lot of other arriving traffic at that time so it was a good bet they would come on the inner runway.  A heavy can disrupt the flow of the lighter wake turbulence category jets.

That proved to be the case.  They came to the inner so I was positioned well for the arrival.  However, the weather wasn’t playing ball.  A bunch of clouds were building off in the distance and they drifted across the sun shortly before arrival.  Rainier was already obscured by cloud/haze but losing the sun was annoying.  Fortunately, the silvery scheme allows a bit more tolerance of less than ideal light.
