Coming Over Coyote

Coyote Point on San Francisco Bay is a spot from which I have shot many times.  It provides the closest spot to the approach path for the planes coming in to the 28 runways at SFO.  It is also a pleasant place to hang out with a nice view of the bay, the marina below with plenty of boat traffic and a fair selection of wildlife.  When shooting from Fisherman’s Park, the approach line makes the planes appear to be coming from behind Coyote Point.  Given that it was a nice clear day when we were there, you had a good view of the approaching jets.  Only the widebodies are large enough to show up well but it makes a change from my usual close-cropped style of shooting to go wider and get something with some local context.

Air Berlin

B11I8246.jpgI wonder how long this plane will continue to show up at SFO.  Air Berlin runs a service to San Francisco which is seasonal in nature.  However, Air Berlin is currently in some difficulty and they are reorganizing the operations.  Some of the services are moving in to Lufthansa control while the long haul stuff may be what remains.  Consequently, they might still come to California but, for now, who knows.  They aren’t a daily feature anyway so I haven’t seen the, very often.  Here was a nice day when they did show up.

Qantas – Late is Bad for Your Customers But Good For Me

AE7I7014.jpgQantas started flying to SFO again this year.  They used to have a regularly scheduled flight but dropped it for a while.  Obviously the demand had increased enough to justify starting it again.  I did a post when they started up.  However, I hadn’t had much luck getting any reasonable shots of the arrival.  When they are running to schedule, they are due in before 9am.  This is not great timing for shooting at SFO in the winter but in the summer the plane will be backlit.

AE7I7032.jpgFortunately, Qantas have a habit of running late on this service.  I don’t know whether this is accidental or whether they will slip this flight deliberately if they have an issue.  The plane has a long layover in SFO and doesn’t depart until near midnight so any delay is not going to have a knock on effect.  Either way, later arrivals are not unknown.  One of them coincided with one of my visits so I was able to get some better light on the jet.  It was summer though.  The middle of the day means high and harsh lighting.  It seems like it is hard to win.  Maybe in the winter I will get a day when they are late and the sun is lower and finally get a good shot.

KLM’s New Toy Comes West

B11I9877.jpgThe arrival of the Boeing 787-8 on the scene got a lot of attention.  It was a new generation of aircraft with a lot of new technologies.  It also was a major disaster for Boeing.  Years late, massively over budget and with a grounding, it did not go according to plan.  The next version was the 787-9 and, with this one, Boeing really got it right.  The -8 was not a bad plane but the -9 is so much better.  It carries more and goes further.  They also fixed a lot of production issues.  The result is a jet that Boeing is happy to sell and airlines want to buy.  Boeing does not like building the -8 anymore and you will notice that not many have been sold recently.  The -9 is going to be the core product and the -10 stretch will be the second option.

B11I9871.jpgAirlines have been adding the -9 to their fleets in good numbers.  Entry of airlines that didn’t order the -8 did pick the -9 and KLM is one of them.  They have started spreading them out on services across the world.  The demise of the MD-11 in their fleet meant that the 777-300ER and the A330 were their staples.  Now the 787 is becoming a big deal and the SFO run is one that they have started using the jet on.  I was pleased to see it show up.  They still send 747-400s to SFO but the 787 is part of the future.  The 747 will be gone before too long.  Meanwhile, I enjoy the novelty of the new jet.  Soon I shall be glad to see the 747 before it disappears.

One of the Bigger Corporate Jets

B11I9345.jpgThere are plenty of types of corporate jets.  However, some organizations (or individuals) decide that what they really need is something a little larger.  How about a Boeing 767-200?  This one was shooting an approach to SFO.  The owner is listed as Blue Sky Holdings.  Who are they you wonder?  Who can say?  They do fly in and out of Moffett Field though and that is owned by quite a large company.  Maybe there is a connection?  Maybe not?

B11I9379.jpgEither way, it was a cool thing to see pop into the viewfinder one afternoon.  Sometimes, you just get lucky.  I also like the registration that they have for the jet.  N2767 is not bad for a 767-200.  Apart from that, the jet is pretty anonymous.  You certainly can’t guess anything about it from the outside.  I wonder what it looks like inside?

A380 Gear Sequence

B11I1197The jets approaching SFO have their gear down long before they reach Coyote Point.  However, if you look into the distance, you can see them lower the gear somewhere around the San Mateo Bridge.  The A380 has a gear sequence that involves the outer gear coming down first followed by the body gear.  I figured I would shoot at long range and then animate the sequence.  Heat haze was not great but I think it shows the way things work.  Maybe in the winter I will try this again and see if I can get a cleaner image.

Sailing Across the Bay on a Windy Day

B11I0652.jpgPlenty of my times alongside San Francisco Bay are airplane or wildlife related.  You do get to see lots of other things on the bay, though, and on a windy day the sailing is definitely worth a look.  Having grown up in a sailing town, I do love to watch sailing, even if I never got into sailing myself.  A lot of boats were out on this day.  I don’t know whether they were racing officially or just were out testing each other but they were certainly getting some speed on.  Watching the sails full of air with the boat healing over dramatically and making good speed is really cool.

Breaking up the Wreck

AE7I4290.jpgA little while ago I posted a picture of a sailing boat that had wrecked on the breakwater at the marina on Coyote Point.  The next time I was back there, I guess I had timed things well.  The boat had been pulled ashore and a guy was busy breaking it up.  He used the front scoop of a backhoe to break the hull up.  Obviously it was beyond rescue.  He would pull sections off and then drop them in a dumpster.  As he broke it up, more of the interior would be visible.  The fiberglass is quite flexible so he had to work to actually break it sometimes.  However, there was only going to be one winner in this contest.

The 777-300ER is King

C59F7753.jpgThe gradual demise of the 747 is a topic that I have brought up on here before. The plane that has been the replacement on a number of services is the Boeing 777-300ER. I was hanging out at Coyote Point recently and, while the majority of arrivals were short haul jets and regional jets, there were a lot of long haul arrivals mixed in there. I was surprised to see just how many 777-330ERs were in the mix now. The A380s were also making an appearance but it seems the 300ER really is a dominant force in the long haul market. This is going to change soon with the arrival of its in house replacement as well as the A350 but, for now, it seems the 300ER rules the roost.

Shipwreck

AE7I0448.jpgI stopped off at Coyote Point in the Bay for a short while.  It hasn’t been so long since I was last there so the new addition I saw must have occurred pretty recently.  It appears that someone has had a little incident with their sailing boat.  I don’t know whether they had a problem making it into the channel to the marina or whether the boat broke loose from a mooring somewhere else in the bay.  Whatever the origin, it is now lying on the rocks just outside the marina.  I didn’t get closer to see how bad the damage is but I am guessing that it is not in great shape!
