That Rare Beast, the 109

The Bf-109 was built in huge numbers but a very small number of them survive.  The Hispano Buchon was a 109 fitted with a Merlin engine and they served after the war and ultimately made their way into collections in bigger numbers but real 109s are a lot thinner on the ground.  They also look so much meaner in my mind courtesy of the thicker nose for the DB engine.  FHCAM has a 109 and it flew during the European Theater Day.

It went out for a run in the morning and I got a couple of quick shots of it then.  It flew again in the afternoon, this time paired with the Mosquito.  Sadly, there were limited times when they were alone and the Mosquito was a priority for me that day so the 109 did not get my focus.  I did get to shoot a few frames of it and, with a sunny day bringing out the camouflage nicely, I was quite pleased with the results.  Obviously there are better conditions to shoot it but I had very few 109 airborne shots before this day so I expanded the collection quite a bit.

BA 747 Formation with a Cessna?

The path of jets into SeaTac from the north takes them right over Boeing Field.  Sometimes, when you are watching something on one path, something going into the other field gets in your field of view.  Either that or a British Airways Boeing 747-400 decided to sneak up on a Cessna.  Knowing some guys who fly for them, I wouldn’t rule it out.

Finally I Get to See the Mossie

I last saw a Mosquito in flight in the early 1990s when the BAe operated example was on the air show circuit prior to its loss at Barton.  I had assumed at that time that I was unlikely to see another one fly.  I never saw Kermit Weeks’ example fly and it has been on the ground for a long time.  I hadn’t counted on the recent interest from collectors in getting rare aircraft rebuilt.  The Mosquito has been a popular project and there are a couple now flying in the US and, I think, another one in Canada.  It is great to see people with the available funds getting these aircraft back in the skies (even if these are pretty close to totally new builds).

One of the Mossies is part of Paul Allen’s collection and the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum (FHCAM).  It had flown a few times since we moved to the area but I had not seen it fly until they held their European Theater Day.  I was determined to see it this time.  I had forgotten just how large an aircraft the Mossie is.  It flew with a bunch of other fighters and included a number of passes with a 109.  The Mossie is huge when next to the 109 and it really has presence.  It is a bit of a pain to photograph because the color scheme has camouflage upper surfaces and black undersides.  With the sun high in the sky, this makes for a very contrasty subject.

I probably got a little overenthusiastic photographing the plane.  It was parked on the ramp before and after the flypasts although not well positioned for the light in either case.  That didn’t stop me though.  When it was flying it got my maximum attention – a little bit of a compromise since the 109 it was partnered with was also something worthy of some shots.  I did get a few of them and they will be in an upcoming post.  It is nice to have finally shot a Mossie though after all of this time.  I look forward to seeing it again, particularly on its own and in more of a display format.

Parallax Preferences

This post is really a question about what people like in an image and what they are prepared to tolerate.  I was at Concrete for the vintage aircraft fly-in up there a while back.  This is an event where you get to be very close to the aircraft.  I was able to experiment with shutter speeds that were very low to get lots of prop blur.  Because the planes are so close, you are not using a long lens and so the low shutter speeds are less likely to cause a problem with camera shake.

However, another problem comes to the fore.  Since you are so close, using a low shutter speed and photographing something that is moving past you, you get parallax issues with sharpness on the plane.  The different parts of the plane are moving at different speeds relative to you as it passes so, if one part of the plane is sharp, another part is unlikely to be so.  The question is, what is acceptable.

I have spoken to friends about this in the past.  One or two of them have expressed their unhappiness with having a blurry part of the airframe.  Others prefer the blur this allows to the background to emphasize the speed.  Some are most bothered about the amount of blur on the prop.

My first instinct with a shot is whether the nose is sharp.  For me this is a bit like whether the eye is sharp on a wildlife shot.  If the nose is sharp, I can tolerate a blurry back end.  But, when the plane is going away from you, the tail is more prominent in the view.  In this case, is it better to have the tail sharp than the nose since the blur of the backend will be the thing you see first and will drive your first impression of the image.  I would really like to know what people prefer.

Stirring Spitfire Performance

In my younger days, I was all about modern aircraft and didn’t have much interest in warbirds.  Over time and having been involved with a number of groups that operate these aircraft, I have grown far more interested.  Being in the US, you get a lot of American vintage aircraft to see.  In the UK I might not have been so bothered about Spitfires but, now I see them less often, they have become of greater interest.

The later model Spitfires seem less graceful to me but the earlier models have a simpler and more elegant appearance.  This one was carrying out some flybys at Paine Field during the Open Day.  The rumble of the Merlin is well known and common to the P-51s.  The line of the Spitfire is unique, though, and seeing it swooping by was really quite exciting.  What a great looking aircraft.

Consequences of a Doolittle Style Takeoff

Grumpy got airborne using the Doolittle technique I posted about here.  During the takeoff, there were some puffs of smoke from one of the engines.  Initially I thought this might just be some oil blowing through but, as they climbed out, the output from the engine was clearly not as it should be and the one engine was clearly not healthy.  They cut short the flight (although not as short as it could have been) and brought the plane back down.  I saw Grumpy fly a few weeks later so I guess they dealt with whatever the issue was.

Doolittle Style Takeoff

Paine Field held an open day which included some flying from the local aircraft.  The Heritage Flight Museum had a number of the aircraft taking part including their B-25, Grumpy.  On one of the takeoffs, they used a technique that was reminiscent of the Doolittle Raid.  They applied power and full back controls to lift the nosewheel from the ground and roll down the runway in a wheelie.  It was quite an interesting thing to see.

The Rarity That is an Aerostar

I keep spoiling Pete with some of his favorites.  I hope he appreciates this one.  You don’t see a lot of Piper Aerostars about.  It is a quite unusual aircraft, apparently designed originally for possible conversion to a jet in future versions.  However, the piston version is the only one that was produced.  The empennage is quite unlike most similar aircraft.  The one I saw was looking like it was very well taken care of.  The paint was certainly in great condition.  It landed at Paine Field and taxied off to park.  I understand it is something of a regular so I will hopefully see it again.

So Close to a Gear Up Landing

A gear up landing is never something you want to have.  What is worse is doing it in front of a lot of people.  However, the crowd can sometimes be a benefit.  The open house at Paine Field included some flybys by various types and one Navion was the last in his group to recover.  Coming down the approach with flap deployed but no gear he looked very odd.  I imagine the horn should have been blaring but, whatever the reason, he continued.  Much frantic waving by the crowd and a call from the air boss had the desired effect, fortunately.  A go around ensued followed by a normal approach a landing.  I understand many beers were bought that night.

Ruslan Chases the Small Guys at Paine Field

Antonov 124s make a regular appearance at Paine Field.  Boeing obviously receives a lot of shipments which I am guessing may be engine deliveries.  Plenty of the flights come from Columbus OH which is near a GE plant and the GE90-115 fan is too big for most freighters when installed.  However, it could be for something else.  Anyway, I got one coming in to Everett recently.  Paine Field is a popular field for light aircraft so you get a lot of them flying patterns on the main runway.  One called up on final when the Ruslan was turning on to final.  They made it in without any trouble but it was quite amusing to see the little plane on final with the unmistakable silhouette of the Antonov not far behind.
