Helicopter Over London

wpid7967-C59F9300.jpgMy Dad’s 70th birthday seemed like something that deserved a decent present.  What to get him though?  As someone who spent his entire working career in London property, he has seen all parts of the city many times.  However, I know he hasn’t seen it from above so much.  Therefore, a helicopter ride over the city seemed like a good idea.  The fact that I thought it would be really cool too is neither here nor there!

wpid7958-C59F9268.jpgI asked a friend of mine who flies helicopters who he would recommend for this and, being an outstandingly good fellow, he volunteered his services.  A very generous gesture.  Having someone I know flying the trip meant it was a lot easier to discuss exactly what we wanted to do.

wpid7965-C59F9292.jpgThe helicopter corridor across London runs along the River Thames.  You join it at Greenwich to avoid the London City Airport airspace and then head along the river through the city and out to the west until you reach Fulham at which point you peel off to avoid Heathrow – always a good idea if they aren’t expecting you!

wpid7952-C59F9223.jpgThe weather was not quite what we had hoped.  The day started very nicely but the haze built up as we went.  Flying early was probably a good idea since it didn’t clear up again until the evening at which point the birthday party was underway.  I saw a few buildings that have sprung up since I left including The Shard.  I do love London and seeing it again from such a great vantage point was a lot of fun.  I hope Dad enjoyed it as much as I did!

Up Close and Personal with an Enstrom

wpid7632-C59F4039.jpgI was visiting a helicopter operator as part of an article that I am working on at the moment.  Unconnected with the subject I was covering are some other operations that they undertake including some flying training activities.  One of the customers was converting onto the Enstrom while I was there so I took the time to get some shots.

wpid7634-C59F4070.jpgThe Enstrom is a cute looking machine to my eye.  The shape of the fuselage is emphasized by getting as close as you can to it.  The best place to be was low and just off the pad.  I was in a safe spot where I was and I knew the capabilities of those in control so was happy to get the shot.  The hardest thing about shooting here is that the downwash is strong so holding steady is tricky.

wpid7636-AU0E0517.jpgWhen the sortie was over, they came back and taxied low across the site so I managed to grab a few more shots.  What better way to spend time on a lovely sunny day?

Passing Airliners

wpid7447-AU0E0226.jpgMore on the looking out of the window of airliners theme today.  This time the subject is other airliners.  If you don’t stare out of the window much, you might not be aware just how much other traffic is out there.  Actually, there is quite a lot.  At various times you might see other jets passing in the opposite direction, pacing you at a distance and crossing your path.  Sometimes they seem very close.  With some of the apps that are available now, if you have wifi on-board, you can even be prepared for some of them showing up.

wpid7445-AU0E9875.jpgHere I shall highlight a quality warning.  The attached shots are not great.  They illustrate a point but nothing more.  There have been quite a few occasions when we passed very close to another aircraft.  However, those were not times I had a camera handy.  even if I had, the chances of getting a good shot are not great.  Even when you are close, you are really not that close.  It just seems a lot closer than normal – which it is.  However, you are still well separated.  Therefore, to get a shot, you need a medium length lens at least.

wpid7443-AU0E9863.jpgSadly, aircraft windows are not designed for optical perfection.  Moreover, since they are pressurized and scratches are a source of fatigue which you certainly do not want, the manufacturers put a nice perspex sheet between you and the window.  They certainly are not optically perfect.  Now you are shooting with quite a long lens through two layers of less than perfect material.  This is not a good recipe for quality shots.  There we go.  I have made plenty of excuses.

wpid7455-AU0E0314.jpgYou are now going to get a small aircraft if you are lucky and a small blur if you are not.  If it is pulling a contrail, you might do better since they can make some nice shapes.  However, chances are you won’t get much at all.

New Angles on O’Hare

wpid7198-C59F1639.jpgI hadn’t been out to O’Hare for a while and with a sunny Sunday according to the forecast and no other things needing to be done imminently, I decided to head out.  I spent the initial time out there getting some pretty normal approach type shots.  A couple of new things for me to see but nothing terribly dramatic.  Then I decided to try some other places.

wpid7196-AU0E5253.jpgI headed around to the west side of the field and looked at what the departures had to offer.  A level of cloud had moved in which was making the sky a little gray in the shots, even if there was still a good level of sun on the planes.  The sun was causing a lot of heat haze and the backgrounds weren’t making for great shots so i decided to bag that idea and head to the approach lights.  With departures off 32L, I could go to the place where the approach crosses the main road and get some head on shots of the departures.

wpid7188-AU0E5009.jpgIt is a bit of a game since the planes appear quite suddenly and are soon over you.  However, it offered some different views.  Not something I will do every time but it was good to get a slightly different perspective on what is on offer.

New Transformers Filming

wpid7530-AU0E5323.jpgThe new Transformers movie is currently filming in Chicago.  Some aerial filming was recently scheduled and we got advanced notice since it was going to make things a little disrupted in the morning.  They were opening three of the bridges along the river and a helicopter was running through at low level filming sequences.

wpid7528-AU0E5313.jpgThe filming work was being carried out by Alan Purwin of Helinet.  Often, when filming is underway, it is hard to get close and get anything recorded.  Obviously, they don’t want people filming there own stuff.  Also, they don’t want you appearing in the shot.  Fortunately, I found a spot where they were happy for us to be and that gave us a view, even if it was a bit restricted.

wpid7524-C59F8446.jpgI actually moved from my first spot.  The helicopter was so low I could only just see the top of the rotor head as it passed.  The second spot gave a more open view.  Watching from that close was very impressive.  It took a couple of hours since they had to open up and close down areas between passes.  Watching them come in was easy but coming the other way was a bit of guesswork as the helicopter could be heard but only appeared suddenly.  Still, another good chance to shoot helicopters in the city.  Am I getting repetitive?

Airlines That No Longer Exist

wpid7084-QB5Y7068.jpgA while back I put together a few shots of Northwest Airlines planes when it occurred to me that I had shots of an airline now departed.  For some reason, this topic popped back into my head again and I started wondering what other airlines I have shots of that no longer operate (at least under the name they had at the time).  I thought about a bunch of airlines that have disappeared but it turned out that I did not have shots of many of them.

wpid7088-QB5Y9809.jpgHowever, there were a few that I came across as I went through the files.  I got interrupted in the process and was not able to search through all of the possibilities but I did get a few from days gone by – some from quite a while back.  Here are some examples.  (Some might find the Continental planes barely gone but they are United these days.)

Other SeaTac Stuff

wpid6819-AU0E2513.jpgThe SeaTac shooting had a number of specific things that I have already covered.  However, since it is an airport that serves a lot of destinations and carriers, it has a bunch of other things worth seeing.  Long haul operators include Delta (serving a lot of routes that were once Northwest), British Airways and Icelandair.  I have always seen the Icelandair aircraft on the ground when traveling through SeaTac but they seem to have a schedule that means one arrives at around the same time the previous day’s arrival departs.  Not a very efficient use of the airframe but I guess it works for them.

Filming helicopter

wpid6825-AU0E2910.jpgSomething I haven’t seen for a while is any filming activity around the city.  We have two big movies being shot in Chicago this summer but I don’t think I have seen anything of them at work yet (unless this is it).  When the filming is underway, you often get a helicopter shooting film from the air.  A turret on the nose holds the camera and the mount is operated by someone inside the helicopter while the pilot positions for the shots that are required.

wpid6823-AU0E2834.jpgI heard a Eurocopter Astar (Squirrel for non-US readers) flying around (not unusual since the local TV stations use them predominantly) but noticed it was a different aircraft with a more prominent mount.  I have seen this Astar doing filming work in the past but not for a while.  The sun was getting low but I decided to try and grab some shots as it came around.

wpid6827-AU0E2935.jpgOf course, just as I did this, it made a couple more passes and then left.  However, it did return later.  By now the light was getting very low.  I suspect the shots he was getting of the city looked great but it was getting tricky to get anything good of him.  However, it is always fun to try.

Horizon schemes

wpid6793-AU0E0898.jpgSeattle is a busy airport with plenty of operators coming through.  However, the home airline is Alaska and their regional affiliate is Horizon.  Consequently, both of them are very busy.  Horizon operates a fleet of Bombardier Q400s.  They used to have some CRJs too but these have been moved to another operator and now they are dedicated to the turboprops.

wpid6795-AU0E1793.jpgThey do seem to have really gone to town in applying special liveries to some of their aircraft.  These are focused on a lot of the local colleges and universities.  They do paint up a lot of planes in school colors!  While I was there, I got a surprising number of them passing by.  Here are a few samples of the different schemes they have (along with one normal one just to show that they aren’t all specials).

Construction Helicopters at the Mart

wpid7220-C59F9985.jpgPreviously I posted about the work with Midwest Helicopters at the Merchandise Mart.  This post included the stills of the job while this one had some video.  That job was all about erecting the steel to support the new chiller units.  Construction Helicopters had the job to lift the chillers themselves since they were considerably heavier than the S-58T can lift.

wpid7210-C59F9951.jpgThis time I ended up shooting the lift from along the river.  While I had originally planned to be back on the roof, the plan changed but it ended up being a better solution.  I wish I had planned it to be so but I will take being lucky any day.  The view from the ground was one I had intended for the first lift if it had gone to the second day so this time i was able to get shots of the building with the helicopter operating in front of and above it.

wpid7218-C59F9978.jpgThis was the first time I had seen the Super Puma that Construction Helicopters have acquired.  I have had a soft spot for the Puma family for many years dating back to a model of an RAF Puma I made as a kid.  It is a great looking helicopter and certainly a powerful performer.

wpid7222-C59F0030.jpgThe weather was excellent and the lift went very smoothly.  The chillers were picked from a barge on the river in front of the Mart and lifted to the roof.  I certainly wasn’t alone in watching the work as quite a crowd gathered along the river to watch.  Great job to everyone involved.
