The Eco-Demonstrator Lives – Where’s the New One?

Boeing has had a number of aircraft in its Eco-Demonstrator program.  The most recent one is a 787-10 that they have been using to test air traffic control innovations including some trans-Pacific flights in coordination with control agencies in various Asian countries.  When I shot the 777 demonstrator a while back, I thought it was the end of the line for that plane and it was heading to desert.  Apparently not.  It is back and flying and made a trip to the Paris Air Show.  I got it on its return recently from Europe.  Maybe we shall see more of it in the coming months.  Now to try and find the 787!

Private KC-135s Look Best Without Barbed Wire

When the Singaporean Air Force wanted to add tanker capabilities a few years ago, they bought some surplus KC-135Rs from the US to operate.  More recently, they acquired some A330 tankers from Airbus and the KC-135s were, again, surplus.  This time they were picked up by a company called Meta Aerospace that bid on refueling work for the US Navy.  I think Meta has changed its name to Metrea – presumably to avoid being confused with the Facebook parent.

Whatever the name, they brought one of the aircraft to Seattle for a little over a week for work that was being undertaken over the Pacific off the coast of Washington.  They have their tankers painted in a rather nice livery with the company logos and I was hoping to catch one.  As it happened, one was up one afternoon and there was a chance of getting there after work to get it.  I headed down thinking I had some time in hand.  I was wrong.  They came back a little earlier than expected, the airport changed runways which meant I had to go further and traffic on that extra section was backed up.  I got to the fence just as it was coming over the threshold and I managed a few weak shots with sections of barbed wire cutting through the airframe in most.

I wondered whether I had missed my only good opportunity but, thankfully, they were around for longer than expected and one of the flights again gave me a chance to get there after work.  This time I was there with a bit more time in hand and was able to get some shots without the added benefit of wire foregrounds!  The plane was on the ground at other times but, at this time of year, the heat haze at Boeing Field is pretty bad.  Only on a crummy Saturday when my friend Chris was in town, was it possible to get a reasonably clear shot of it parked up.  I wonder if we will see it back here at some point in the future.

Ameristar DC-9 But It Doesn’t Move

This plane was teasing me.  Ameristar has DC-9s in its fleet and they are clearly not young airframes, but it is nice when they get a fresh paint job.  One was at Boeing Field in a shiny new looking livery.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t going anywhere while I was near it.  I got shots of it on the ramp and near the terminal building.  I also got an overhead shot of it from up on the hill.  None of these involved it doing anything other than sitting there though.  Let’s hope I get lucky with it before too long.

Lots of Approach Vapor for Video

Seattle is a place where you can get a fair bit of humidity at certain times of day.  Earlier in the day, there might be a lot of cloud but it will burn off as the day goes on and you have some sunny afternoons and evenings.  Watching the planes on approach to SEA on days like this can make for some rapidly changing conditions.  I was watching a bunch of jets heading towards SEA as they came through the clouds and into clear air.  They would be leaving trails in the cloud base behind them as they went but would be trailing their own little vapor fields behind them.

The conditions didn’t last long and soon the clouds were almost gone and the amount of vapor that they were pulling was minimizing.  The vapor was clearly aligned with the flaps on the wings so you could see where the air was being worked the hardest.  I did get some shots of them for this which I shall share later but the way in which the vapor puffs and dissipates is best seen in video, so I shot a bunch of that.  Most planes were coming directly over me but a couple of the wide-bodies were going to the inner runway so were offset from my location.

Leaking Fuel and Engines That Won’t Start

The Memorial Day weekend included the visit to Boeing Field of four F/A-18 Hornets from the US Marine Corps.  I had heard that they were in the area but wasn’t able to get out to see them until the Monday of the holiday weekend when they were due to head home.  Weather was a bit overcast so not great for shooting a grey jet!  Still, I wasn’t going to ignore them.  When I got there, the crews were just beginning to look like they would be ready to go.

However, things were not going to be smooth.  One of the jets was the color jet and I had heard that it had been leaking fuel during the stay.  Sure enough, when they fueled it up for departure, it must have leaked again because a bunch of ground crew – presumably from the FBO – were suddenly out with absorbent pads and brooms to clean up whatever had spilled.  This took quite a while to get done so the four pilots were hanging around the jets waiting to be clear to go.

Finally, everything was tidied up and they crewed in for departure.  The sound of engines starting was a positive one but, as one jet fired up one of the engines, it definitely didn’t sound like it was spooling up at the same rate as the others.  Sure enough, one jet shut down and the pilot hopped out of the cockpit, walked back down the fuselage and slid to the ground.  I’m not sure what he did to the jet but he then retraced his steps, back up on the jet and strapped back in.  This time, the start sequence went okay and they were all ready to taxi.

Ospreys Through BFI – Not The Birds, Though

I spent a portion of a Saturday with my buddy Chris as he was passing through town.  While I was waiting for him, I headed to Boeing Field and was surprised to see a V-22 Osprey on the ramp across the field.  The crew was working around it with some panels on the nacelles open but it became clear that they were buttoning things up for a while.  They soon headed off and I did similarly to get Chris from the airport.

When he had made it through immigration, we headed back to Boeing Field and, while walking near the terminal building, the sound of rotors caught our attention.  I barely had time to get the camera ready as a V-22 came into view.  It was heading to the same area as the other one, so we got some shots of it in the semi-transitioned configuration and then went around to the other side of the field to see the pair of them parked up.  I have no idea when they left but at least I got a little activity, even if on a grey and overcast day.

Qantaslink 717 Finally Makes It Through Seattle

Word was circulating amongst the local photographers about the impending arrival of a Boeing 717.  Qantaslink has been operating the 717s in Australia for many years but is now in the process of replacing them.  One of the first to be replaced had made its way as far as Anchorage and was heading to Victorville for repainting and refitting for its next operator.  It was due to stage through Seattle before the final leg to California.  However, while the flight plan was filed, it never left Anchorage.

The process was repeated for multiple days.  I think it may have been over a week before the plane actually moved from its parking spot in Anchorage and headed for the runway.  To be honest, I was still wondering whether it would get airborne but, once it did, I prepared to head down to BFI.  The journey must have been relatively uneventful as they arrived when expected.  There was already a flight plan for the next stage of the trip, so I hung around waiting for the departure.

Part of me wondered whether the jet would break again but all was well, and they headed off.  The flight crew had Australian accents and were working for a ferry company judging by the flight number.  With the plane safely delivered, I am now curious to see whether more of the fleet will make the same journey.  Maybe we’ll get bored of Qantas liveried 717s coming through.

G700 Test Jet

I posted about the arrival of some Hunters and, in that post, I mentioned that I was there for a Gulfstream test jet.  A couple of years ago, I managed to get some shots of a G600 test jet and I had been hoping to catch a G700 at some point.  When one of the test aircraft filed a flight plan for Boeing Field, I finally had my opportunity.  I was waiting for it when the Hunters showed up.  It wasn’t far behind them that my original target showed itself.

This is the fourth test aircraft.  It is in a nice paint job typical for the average anonymous bizjet but it gives hints to its true purpose by having some of the windows replaced with instrumentation.  I was able to get it as it came in from the south, albeit with the usual cluttered background that Boeing Field has.  Fortunately, they were operating out of the field for a few days and I was able to come back at a later date to catch it on approach from the other end.

Different Angles on Sentimental Journey

A jump back to the visit of Sentimental Journey last year.  Because she was here for a while, I was able to shoot from a variety of locations to try and get some different shots of her.  The weather played ball while she was in Seattle unlike the conditions at Arlington the following week.  It was fun to try some different angles on the same plane since I had got the initial shots I wanted.

Breeze Comes to Town (But Not With the A220 Yet)

Breeze is an airline that was recently formed by the guy that started up JetBlue.  It has an initial east coast focus but is supposed to gradually expand west.  We do not have scheduled service yet but they seem to also undertake charter operations.  When the airline was announced, it was supposed to use Airbus A220s.  I guess the pandemic made aircraft availability better and they picked up a bunch of Embraer E190s.  The A220s have started to come online but the Embraers are currently the big part of the fleet.

One of them was making a trip to Boeing Field.  Not sure why it was coming but I figured this was worth a look.  I tracked the jet as it lined up for the approach but I hadn’t heard it call in.  At some point, I heard the tower call to ask if they were on frequency and no response.  At this point, it was pretty close in.  I guess, without a clearance, they decided to go around.  They climbed out over the field.  A side effect of this was to cause a Delta 737 that was on approach to SEA to have to also go missed as the Embraer was conflicting with its flight path.  I suspect they were a touch annoyed.

The Embraer then was vectored around for a second approach.  On this one, everything seemed to be a lot more normal.  I heard them call up a decent distance out and they were cleared to land which they did without incident.  The sky blue livery is quite catching and I would like to see one of the A220s at some point soon.  I wonder whether we will get service out here at some point?
