Shocking Shells

wpid10608-C59F3229-2.jpgMy trip to Arizona to shoot the shooting A-10s was a lot of fun and something I have already covered. One aspect of this shoot that caught my interest was the cannon shells in flight. I have seen images from other people that allow you to see the A-10’s shells leaving the muzzle or flying to the target and when I got something similar, I was quite pleased. However, a shot that really caught my eye was one of them that had a background with some clouds visible.

wpid10606-C59F3229.jpgThis background provides a mechanism to see any discontinuities in the density of the air as is experienced in a shockwave. This is the effect that is used in Schlieren photography in wind tunnels. The refractive index of the air changes as the density changes. Normally you don’t see this. However, if the background is not continuous, the refraction of the background results in the shockwave being visible. One of the shells showed this up and I thought it was cool. Therefore, I am sharing it here just in case you think it is cool too!

Curtiss Jenny

wpid10622-C59F2981.jpgThere are many vintage aircraft that I have had the chance to photograph over the years. However, I have not had many opportunities to photograph a genuine First World War era aircraft. That was something that I was recently able to address. Sonoma Valley in Schellville has a variety of interesting aircraft as I have mentioned in the past. One of these is Frank’s beautiful Jenny. It is in pristine condition. I had previously been around when it was due to fly but a fuel leak in a line had curtailed activities that day.

wpid10618-C59F2698.jpgThis time the plan was to fly a couple of people in the aircraft. Eric Presten was the pilot for these flights and he needed to run a quick air test before taking anyone up so three flights appeared to be on the cards. I arrived at Schellville in the morning to be ready. Unfortunately, the weather was not looking too cooperative. There was a little mist and the cloud base was pretty low with the surrounding hills having their tops obscured. We got the aircraft ready as we waited for the cloud to lift which it progressively did.

wpid10614-AU0E0081.jpgEric was soon able to get up for the air test. While the conditions were better for flying, they still weren’t great for photography. However, while he was up, the cloud was burning off more and more. The result was, by the time the two flights for the guest took place, conditions were ideal. For the second ride, Eric put in an overflight of the field allowing me to get something other than ground running shots, tail end departures or head on landings. The latter two were subject to a lot of heat haze so it was great to get something a little closer in.

wpid10616-C59F2600.jpgShe truly is a lovely looking aircraft and an example of something very rare to see. I will enjoy seeing her flying again. What will be even better is getting a chance to shoot her air to air. If the opportunity for that should come up, I will be a very happy boy. In the mean time, I am very grateful to Frank and Eric for including me in this. Great guys and a great plane!

Hawgsmoke 2014

wpid10588-C59F3249.jpgEvery other year, the A-10 community in the US Air Force holds a competition called Hawgsmoke. This year it was being held in Arizona. The aircraft were based at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson and the Goldwater range complex was where most of the exercise was taking place. With the possibility that the A-10 might be taken out of service hanging over things, I was keen to get down there in case this was the last time the event would take place.

wpid10594-C59F3331.jpgI covered the event for Global Aviation Resource so you can see the article I produced here. Rather than repeat that, I shall provide a little of the back-story. Arizona in July is not the coolest place in the world. Head out into the desert and it is even warmer. Get taken there in an Air Force bus which has air conditioning that doesn’t work properly and you will be pretty toasty. If the young guy driving the bus appears to be falling asleep all of the time, you are feeling a bit more alert than might otherwise be the case in that heat.

One of the TV crews from a local station obviously decided he had seen enough and told the organizers that he would miss his deadline if we didn’t leave. He had been given the same schedule as the rest of us so I suspect he was talking crap. However, while we were on the range for less time than expected, we still got a great experience of the A-10s running in to shoot the targets. The close proximity as they fired was something else as was their break over the top of us after each pass.

wpid10596-C59F3573.jpgIt was a good bunch of guys on the trip and we all headed out to shoot around Davis Monthan when we got back. This gave me a chance to get some more shots of the A-10s that would fill out the article a little. By the end of the day, I was shattered. I had been drinking liquid all day but I think I was just keeping out of trouble rather than being properly hydrated. Still, it was really worth it. A little longer and the benefit of the sun coming around would have been nice but it was still cool (but hot!). Below is some video that I shot for GAR while I was there too.

Collings Foundation

wpid10346-C59F8178-Edit.jpgThe Collins Foundation carry out a tour throughout the country with their vintage aircraft showing them off to many communities, sharing a message about what people did in the Second World War and providing an opportunity to ride in some historic machinery. I have seen them in the past while we lived in Chicago. Their tour this year brought them through the Bay Area with stops at Moffett Field and Livermore. Since the latter is close to home, I went along to see them.

wpid10336-AU0E7769-Edit.jpgThe part of the collection that they bring on tour includes a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, a Consolidated B-24 Liberator and a North American P-51 Mustang. I headed over to Livermore ahead of their planned arrival time and plenty of people had already gathered to see them come in. We all waited for a while and then the B-17 appeared over the hills. It made its approach and landed a short while before the B-24 showed up and followed suit. The P-51 was last of the three making a nice pass before landing. What I hadn’t anticipated was a B-25 Mitchell was also following them in. A quick turnaround and the three main players were soon launching off for flights with expectant passengers.

wpid10271-C59F7859.jpgAt this point I headed off as I had other things to do. Later in the day I came back and managed to catch an evening launch of the B-17. The following evening I had more free time so came back again. Another evening launch and recovery as the light got better and better. Then, as everyone packed up, the Collings team was kind enough to let me take some shots around the ramp. A local P-51 was parked up while the Collings P-51 had disappeared somewhere. As the sun set, I shot around the various aircraft and included a cracking 1937 Oldsmobile that one of the volunteers had brought along. With the light fading, the ramp lights came on which gave me a whole new bunch of opportunities to get some shots. I shot a lot until it was pretty late. At that point I headed home. The following day they also departed moving on to the next stop on their tour. If they come your way, make the effort to get out and see them. If you have the money, take a ride and support the continued operation of these great aircraft.

Red Flag 14-2

wpid9297-C59F9220.jpgWhen things go according to plan, the USAF holds their Red Flag exercise three times a year at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas NV.  Global Aviation Resource like to provide some coverage so, with the second event of the 2014 program taking place in march, I headed down to cover the event.  I spent a couple of days down there.  One day was on base as guests of the public affairs people at Nellis.  They started out the day with an interview panel with a number of officers from different units and air forces.  They were a good bunch and willing to answer our questions – well, most of them since they wisely avoided answering some questions that should never have been asked of them.

wpid9289-AU0E5816.jpgWith the interviews over, we headed out to the runways.  There are two runways at Nellis that are used together.  We were able to stand between them and given relatively free range as to how far up and down we wanted to go.  There are clear preferences as to which runway you want them to use based on the light.  The launch took place around the middle of the day and they launched off to the northeast.  In this case he light was best on the aircraft on the left runway.  However, you have to do what you can for those on the right as well – often the aircraft you want to focus on.  (There is a bunch of aircraft that you are told not to photograph.  Often it takes a while to realize that what is coming is something you can’t shoot but most people seemed to play by the rules.)

wpid9301-C59F0645.jpgWhen the recovery starts, they tend to use the opposite runways.  By now the light has come around so you really want them to come in on the left.  Sadly, a lot of traffic went to the right.  If you had been outside, you would have got a good amount of traffic to shoot.  When recoveries had wrapped up, we all got back on the buses and headed out.  The second day I spent outside the base.  This provides an opportunity to get a different selection of shots for the article.  It also is unrestricted in what you can shoot so some of the stuff that was restricted while on base can now be shot for the coverage.  Sadly, various things resulted in a lot of the recovering traffic going to the left.  This would have been great if I was on base but sadly it meant a lot of interesting stuff was a long way off.  Still, plenty of stuff came our way.  With the Speedway building up to a NASCAR racing weekend, the crews had been told to keep it tight.  Some certainly did that and came a lot closer to us than expected or even turned within us.  It made for some interesting angles to shoot.

Curtiss Jenny

wpid9248-AU0E9870.jpgWhen talking about vintage aircraft, I am frequently discussing aircraft that are from the Second World War era or later.  However, one of the residents of Schellville is a Curtiss Jenny.  This is a First World War aircraft and the example here is an original.  It doesn’t get to fly very often but I was lucky to be there on a day when it was planned to take it up for a couple of sorties.  We moved it out to fuel up and then took it onto the field to launch.  (It should be noted that pushing an aircraft around the field quickly makes you appreciate where the gradients are.  What looks like nothing when you are walking suddenly becomes conspicuous when pushing an aircraft – even a relatively light older one!)

wpid9246-AU0E9866.jpgWe crewed up the Jenny and got her ready for start.  Unfortunately, fortune was not on our side.  She fired up willingly enough but a quick check of the engine compartment after start revealed a fuel leak and we shut her down.  A trip back to the hangar to troubleshoot meant that there would be no flying that day.  Once back inside, a hose was found to be split and this was the source of the fuel.  Not the sort of thing you want to find out about while flying so the sound approach of everyone was justified.  Fixing the hose was easy so, hopefully the Jenny will be flying again soon.  Now to get some good weather and availability for everyone concerned!

Blue Angel

wpid9133-C59F7796.jpgA surprise visitor at Boeing Field timed his arrival perfectly.  I had just pulled up at the field when I saw something running in on the approach at speed and not descending.  This had the look of a military break.  I didn’t have the camera out but, fortunately, given that it looked like they would break downwind to land, I had some time to grab the camera.  Sure enough, it was an F/A-18 that broke overhead.  More interestingly, it was a two seater from the Blue Angels.

wpid9131-C59F7780.jpgI was ready by the time it was on the approach and managed to get a few shots as they landed.  They then taxied over to Clay Lacy’s FBO and parked up.  Not sure what they were in for but it could involve the planning for Seafair later in the year.  Whatever the reason, a nice surprise.

P-40 Tomahawk

wpid8396-AU0E8973.jpgArriving in a new part of the world means a lot of new aeronautical experiences are waiting to be had.  Those who have lived here a while know where the good things are to be seen but I don’t.  Therefore, it is best to take advantage of the knowledge that is already there.  Fortunately, I already know a few people out this way but also, courtesy of friends back in the Midwest, I have been introduced to some new people who are very familiar with the local aviation scene.

wpid8435-C59F1166.jpgMy friend Paul was in the area for work and we wanted to take a trip out.  I dropped a line to Roger, one person that I had been put in contact with, to see what he could suggest.  He said Sonoma would be the place to go.  There are two airfields very close to each other and we shall hear more of one of them another day.  On this day, we spent our time at Sonoma Valley or, as it seems to be more familiarly known, Schellville.  They hold an open day once a month and this was one of those days.

wpid8370-C59F0448.jpgWe arrived and things looked pretty quiet but it was early in the day.  We weren’t sure whether we had come to the right spot at first so made a quick recce down the street.  Finding nothing (at least nothing that made us feel like we were in the right place!), we came back to where we had started and there on the ramp where, only a few minutes previously, nothing had been now sat a P-40 Tomahawk.  This came as quite a surprise.

wpid8390-C59F0681.jpgAs we were looking over the fence at it, out comes a P-51 Mustang and parks next to it.  Towing them around was a guy called Chris who willingly told us about the day, what he was planning to fly and a good spot for us to go and put our stuff which would provide a good view of proceedings and some shade and seating!  Result.  We had a wander around before getting ourselves in position for the planned flight of the P-40.

wpid8394-AU0E8970.jpgA guy from Silicon Valley was having the flight as a birthday treat.  We watched them taxi out and depart before running in across the field.  Then they headed off to fly around the local area.  Not a bad start to the day!

Team SHAR

wpid7576-AU0E2766.jpgI have spent time with Art Nalls and his Team SHAR at various events over the years but it had been a while since we had last crossed paths.  Therefore, it was good to see Art and the guys again at Gary for the Chicago Air and Water Show.  This year has been a busy year for the team.  Not only have they got themselves well established on the show circuit but the lack of military participation has meant a relatively modern fast jet is in high demand to fill the gap left by the normal front line fighters.  Add to that, the difference that a Harrier brings and you can see why their calendar has been filling up.

wpid7580-C59F4939.jpgI caught up with Art early in the day and ended up running some errands with him for a while.  However, I didn’t want to miss other acts on the ground so left them for a while to do some other stuff.  I did get back later in the day and chatted to the guys for a while and watched the launch and recovery.  With the jet on the ground, I also took the time to get some shots of it while no one was working on it.  On the final day of the show, I did head back to the beach to try and catch it in action too.

wpid7592-AU0E3939.jpgIt was, as always, great to hang out with the team.  They did a great job and closed out the show nicely.  I hope it isn’t as long before I next see them!

Heritage Flight Foundation Visit

wpid6724-AU0E8355.jpgThe field trip during the ISAP Symposium was held at Paine Field in Everett.  We were hosted by the Heritage Flight Foundation and its owner John Sessions and they were excellent hosts.  (I visited once before and you can see that post here.)  Aside from the selection of aircraft still in the hangar where we were set up, they had arranged some photo sorties with some of their aircraft.  The B-25, Grumpy, was the camera ship for a few photographers and the P-51 Mustang was the target.  A T-6 also went up as a second camera ship.  Each photo position was a paying ride with the T-6 obviously being the premium slot.

wpid6706-AU0E7804.jpgI had decided not to take the ride.  It was not cheap although certainly not bad value for money.  As the weather was not looking great, I wondered whether I had chosen wisely.  As it was, the people who did go up did get some great images.  The area certainly can provide some nice backdrops and the light, while flat, did not hurt things.  However, even as someone on the ground, the flights seemed over very fast so I imagine for those on board, it was gone all to quickly.

wpid6712-C59F9236.jpgFor those of us on the ground, we got treated to the departure and arrivals of the aircraft plus a few passes of the P-51 and T-6 which were a lot of fun.  Gloomy skies made it all a little flat looking but still a great sight.  Being able to be close to the aircraft during the start up, taxi out and return was certainly worthwhile.  The following day they were having a public event and I hope the weather improved for the large numbers they were expecting.
