Pacific Grove

wpid13815-AU0E1290.jpgI have posted plenty of pictures of Monterey and the surrounding area in the past. As you head along the shore, you actually move from Monterey in to Pacific Grove. It is quite strange how you go from the tourist center of Monterey onto some beautiful shoreline in a very short space of time and the number of people plummets. That is not to say Pacific Grove is deserted but it is a far more tranquil spot to be. The path along the top of the cliffs is great for wandering along and seeing what the sea is doing and what wildlife is out.

wpid13809-AU0E1217.jpgThe birds are a constant presence as you walk but looking down to the water you get to see whatever the abundant sea life of Monterey Bay has to offer. On this trip a few seals were resting on the rocks and some Sea Otters were going about their business close in to the ricks despite the waves crashing around them. Must be good food near there.

wpid13805-AU0E1193.jpgThe other “marine life” we saw was a group of people swimming out into the bay. I assume it was a club of some sort since it seemed very organized. A lot of people of varying age and ability were swimming out to a marker buoy and back. They seemed to have a lot of fun although some seemed noticeably tired once they were out of the water. Since I would have had a very hard time doing what they were doing, I can certainly sympathize!

Mariposa Grove

The last time I was in Yosemite, it had just snowed and so the access to Mariposa Grove was cut off.  It is a shame since visiting the groves of sequoias is one of the high points for me.  The redwoods at the coast are impressive, certainly, but they don’t have the massiveness that the inland relatives have.  Previously I have taken the tram ride around the grove so this time I decided to walk it.  It was a pleasant temperature but the altitude is a bit of a factor so there were times when I was wondering whether my plan was so clever.

However, the nice thing about the grove is that you are heading downhill when you are on the way back and suddenly everything seems a lot easier.  Walking does give a great way to experience the whole place at your own pace as well as see some areas that you wouldn’t see on the tram.  You also get some exercise!

The lower part of the grove has some big trees but not as many as the upper grove.  Getting up there allows you to be surrounded by some enormous living things.  Every once in a while, I had to look at a normal tree (big by most standards) to remind myself just how much bigger the sequoias are.  They are vast!  Again, this is a tricky thing to accurately portray in photographs.  However, sometimes you just have to enjoy the prettiness of it all.  Having something in to scale it every once in a while helps too of course.

Poplar Grove

After my visit to the WACO reunion as recounted in a previous post here, I had a lot of pictures of a WACO owned by Steve and Tina Thomas. They own Poplar Grove airport northwest of Chicago. I had been there before and my earlier visit is described here. I decided to print a couple of shots from the sortie and take them up to Steve as a thank you.

I dropped in one Sunday and found Steve in his office. He was pleased with the pictures and took me off for a tour of parts of the field. They own a lovely Beech 18 as well as the WACO and their hangar has a great selection of prints and memorabilia on display so we had a look at that. Then we headed up to the hangar of Sean, another WACO owner. We chatted for a while and watched some Cub flying activity on the grass strip in front of Sean’s hangar.

Steve needed to get back to work so I got my car and ended up back at Sean’s place. We chatted about the usual aviation stuff while he cleaned his aircraft and I watched the flying.  The Cub was being flown by Rick Kluver and, when he knew there was a camera nearby, he came by to give me something to shoot.  He landed after having finished with his two previous passengers and we chatted for a while.

Rick’s Cub is one of the planes that I shot when we went to Oshkosh for the skiplane flyin and I had met him then.  You can see a previous post about that here. Anyway, it didn’t take long before he offered me a ride.  It would be churlish to refuse so I hopped in for my first ride in a Cub.  I took the camera along of course.

Rick says he gets altitude sickness so likes to keep it low.  In a plane like a Cub with the side open, this is a great way to fly.  Down amongst the scenery, we got to see some cattle in a river and even some deer that we obviously startled a little.  It was a fun little trip and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.  There was time for a little video to be shot so the results of that are below.  As before, Poplar Grove proved to be a friendly and welcoming environment. I will be back!

Poplar Grove – A Friendly Place!

There are occasions when you have an idea for something that you want to do, get a bit of a start on it and then it falls by the wayside for a long time.  Such was the case with heading to Poplar Grove.  I had read something about this airfield not far from Rockford IL and thought I should check it out.  I made contact with the owner of the field and he said I was welcome to visit any time.  After that, somehow I got distracted from this and didn’t follow up.  Not only a failing on my part but also rather rude!  Not the impression I would normally expect to give someone I hope – other than my friends and family who know my true nature of course!

Despite all of this, Poplar Grove came back into my mind recently.  I am looking at the Oshkosh Ski plane fly in later this month and a group from Poplar Grove are regular attendees when the conditions allow.  I made contact with them about possibly working together if the weather allows the fly in to go ahead.  This reminded me of my previous failings to do anything after my previous contact.

This time, I decided to be a bit more cautious.  Rather than contact some people and then fail to follow through, I decided to take advantage of the continuing pleasant weather and make a trip up.  The Sunday weather forecast looked very promising and a weekend is more likely to have activity for light aircraft.  I got on the road early and headed up to the field.

Surprisingly, it doesn’t appear on my GPS.  However, a little check on Google Maps was enough to point me to where I needed to set the destination and I got there without any trouble.  A couple of aircraft departed as I pulled into the lot which always inspires a bit of confidence.  Initially I decided to just hang out in the lot and see what was going on.  Standing around with a 500mm lens tends to start a few conversations and this was no exception.

One guy stopped by to ask if I had got any pictures of his son who was learning to fly and had been up while I was stood there.  Another couple of people said Hi! as they passed by and another guy stopped for a longer chat.  He pointed out that the field was a friendly place and, if I knew how to stay out of trouble on an airfield, it would be fine to take a walk to some other spots.

I followed his advice and headed off.  The layout of the field is very cool.  There is one hard runway and two grass strips.  One of the grass strips and the hard runway were both in operation.  There were many hangars (apparently about 450 aircraft are based on the field) and there are also some houses with taxiway access.  I want to move!

Standing near one taxiway I got a good view of the aircraft movements.  As people taxied by I would get friendly waves which I reciprocated.  What a nice place.  The chap I had talked to previously drove up and we ended up talking for a while.  His name is Steve Langdon and he is involved with the EAA chapter that I had been talking to as mentioned earlier on!  He told me about the many different and interesting aircraft that people operate or are working on at the field.  This was reinforced by the arrival of one T-34 and the departure of another – one that obviously knew where I was!

By lunchtime, I really needed to be heading back to Chicago so started to walk back to the car.  I passed an open hangar with a beautiful Beech 18 sitting in it.  This belongs to the owners of the field and, having now been back in touch with them, I hope to get a chance to photograph this aircraft at some point.  I suspect there are plenty of other aircraft on the field that I will want to shoot as well.  This place is a treasure trove.
