My Luck with the Snowbirds Continues to Go Downhill

Last year, when I went to the Abbotsford Air Show, the Snowbirds were displaying with eight jets instead of nine.  There had been an issue with one of the crew and they were completing the season down a jet.  When I headed to Comox this year for the show, I was hoping to get a full display from the Snowbirds.  That was not going to be the case.  On arrival, my friend Mark advised me that one of the pilots had injured an arm in a non-aviation related accident.  Oh well, I thought.

Then, when they started up for the display, one of the jets wouldn’t play ball.  I thought they might run to a spare jet but, no, we were down another jet.  This meant we would only have seven jets for the display.  Surprisingly, this didn’t cause as many issues in my shots as I thought it might.  The four ship cross was gone which was disappointing but, when shooting tightly on the formations, things actually seemed to look okay.  In fact, sometimes it stopped me having to worry about getting the whole formation in shot since they had “cropped” for me.

It was a pretty good display and I enjoyed watching it.  Here is a selection of shots from the day.

An Aurora Is a Bit of a Rarity These Days

For many years, the majority of maritime patrol operators have been using P-3 aircraft.  However, with the advent of the P-8 Poseidon, the number of P-3s is rapidly reducing.  Canada operates its own version of the family called the CP-140 Aurora.  With their continued operation, that are now becoming a bit of a treat to see.  I had hardly ever seen one in action before so, when they were displaying at the show at Comox, I was really pleased to get a chance to get some photos of one.

As with all military jets these days (or so it seems), grey is the order of the day.  Not the most exciting paint job but a different version of grey is definitely good.  They threw the plane around with plenty of energy in the display so the photo opportunities were good including a pass with the weapons bay open.  The replacement of the Aurora is currently being pursued so they won’t be around for much longer so good to get them now while the opportunity presents itself.  Funny how little I was interested in P-3s when I was younger and now I am hunting them down!

Tango Really Does Like to Get Those Jetpipes Close

Those that have seen photos from the air show scene in 2024 may well have seen the spirited departure that the Royal Canadian Air Force Hornet demo includes.  The CF-188 gets pulled aggressively to the vertical and the speed of rotation is chosen carefully so that the engine nozzles get very close to the ground, but the airframe is already lifting and climbing so that no contact is made.  It makes for some cool shots.  At Abbotsford and Comox, I was nowhere close enough to get a good look at the moment of rotation, but Bremerton provided a better chance.  Rather far away so a bit hazy but still pretty cool.  Shame the special demo jet broke again, and we had the twin tub instead.

The Kingfisher is Flying but not a Demo Yet

The introduction of the Kingfisher to Canadian Air Force service has been a bit drawn out and is not yet complete.  This version of the Airbus C295 has some customization which has yet to be fully worked out.  However, there are a number of the aircraft delivered including at Comox AFB on Vancouver Island.  For the air show, there was one on the ramp and another was up and flying in the morning.  It was not performing a demo, but it flew a lot of patterns before the show got underway.  Therefore, I had my first exposure to a flying Kingfisher.  They should be a more regular sight in the Pacific Northwest in due course.

Canadian Air Force 100th Anniversary Hornet

The Comox AFB air show was the first public display of the special anniversary painted CF-188A Hornet for the Canadian Air Force’s 100th birthday.  There had been some photo sorties undertaken in the weeks before the show to support some upcoming appearances, but this was its first public outing.  They pulled the jet out to the center of the crowd line for crewing and start up and it returned there after its display was complete.

The paint scheme is really impressive, and I hope the aging jet can stay serviceable throughout the season, so air show attendees get to see it in the air.  It does look very good.  The RCAF does seem to have a good history of painting demo jets really well and they must be very pleased with this one.  The light was a bit variable while it flew but I was happy with some of the shots I got of it.  One the ground it also looked great, particularly close up.

My First Polaris – Just In Time

The Royal Canadian Air Force will soon be getting new tanker transport aircraft.  They are going to buy some Airbus A330 MRTTs to replace their CC-150 Polaris jets.  These are based on the A310 and I have never seen one before.  Fortunately, there was one on static display at Abbotsford for the air show.  It was in the grey scheme rather than the brightly painted version but that was fine by me.  I was just glad to get one before they are replaced.  It would be good to see one flying but I suspect the chances of that are diminishing.  You never know, though.
