Two Old Esprits

My soft spot for the Lotus Esprit has shown itself with various posts over the years with historic shots or more recent images of preserved examples.  Most of these have been of the later versions of the Esprit when the styling was slightly more curved, and the bigger engines were installed such as the Turbo SE or the V8.  The Classics Day at Exotics@RTC provided two of the original versions of the Esprit.  They were parked in the prime spots in Redmond Town Center and garnered plenty of attention.

Yellow and red are two colors that will definitely get attention for a sports car and there were lots of people checking them out.  The red one had the tartan interior which really tells you the era when this car was produced.  I bet you weren’t seeing that sort of finish in the late 80s!  I had got there early so did okay getting shots without too many people in the way but as the morning wore on and more people showed up, the shots got harder to make.  A little Photoshop effort would be needed.

Esprit V8

As a young kid growing up in the 70s watching Bond movies, the Lotus Esprit that became a SAM launching submarine made a big impact on me.  The next movie also had an Esprit, this time in turbo form, but it got blown up very quickly and a 2CV was the “star” of that movie which did not please me at all.  My love for the Esprit was born and it continued through the Turbo SE and to the V8.  It had another movie appearance in Pretty Woman although I suspect only a few of us watching were impressed.

A V8 example showed up at Redmond.  I got chatting to the owner, a Brit as it turned out.  He had owned a Turbo in the UK and then bought the V8 after he moved to the US.  Apparently, only about 70 were sold in the US and maybe half of them are still in use.  I loved checking it out and talking with him about the car.  It also reminded me of one that used to live in South Kensington when I lived there so I dug out the old negative scan and that one is included here too.  What a great looking car.  A shame the gearbox was never able to accommodate the power the engine had potentially on offer.

Ah, An Esprit!

Since I didn’t grow up in the US, a lot of the older cars in museums are not ones that I knew about as a kid.  However, a Lotus Esprit is one right out of my childhood.  I fell in love with this car as a result of The Spy Who Loved Me when Bond’s Esprit morphed into a submarine.  From then on, I dreamed of owning this car.  The America’s Car Museum has an example of the pre-turbo Esprit in its collection and, while it certainly is dated by the styling, I still think it is a great looking car.  Just don’t pay attention to the switches and knobs pinched from the parts bins of the major car manufacturers of the time!
