Volga Dnepr Arrives and Departs in the Crummy Weather

The presence of the IL-76 in the Pacific Northwest showed up in a previous post of mine here.  I wasn’t aware of one being back here until I was up at Paine Field and one was parked up at the Boeing facility.  It had come in during the night and didn’t go back out again until I was at work.  I actually saw it fly by my window as it headed out.  I figured it was done but I was wrong.

The message got out that it was due back in to Paine Field during the weekend.  The weather forecast was not great (again) but it was too good a chance to pass up.  I was not the only one either.  A lot of people had shown up to see it come in.  The cloud base was pretty low and the plane was quite close in before it popped out of the murk.  As it came down the approach, it was easy to see.  Aside from the plane itself, the trailing vortices from the flap system were streaming behind the aircraft with the moist atmosphere making them very conspicuous.

As they floated across the threshold, the vortices were still very conspicuous and they floated a good way down the runway streaming all the way.  In fact, even after touchdown, the vortices were still visible.  They taxied back in to the north entrance to the Boeing ramp where the waiting committee were ready.  That will be work another post of its own.

A day later the departure was scheduled.  Of course, the weather was still pretty crappy.  Nevertheless, I wasn’t going to pass it up.  The flight was only a short one though.  They were heading to Dallas and I don’t think they were carrying much.  Consequently, they were lightly loaded and got off the ground quickly.  The climb was steep and they were up into the cloud base before too long.  Still, I managed to get a few shots of them as they went off.  I wonder if I will get to see an IL-76 in the sun at some point?

Qatar Cargo Recycles the Seahawks 747-8F

Boeing announced the sale of a couple of 747-8F freighters to Qatar Cargo and then immediately delivered one of them.  I was confused at the time as I thought it would be a while before the deliveries took place, but it turned out that they had sold a couple of jets that had been previously built but had not been delivered.  The second of the jets was recently in flight test.  This jet is quite well known as Boeing had painted it up in Seattle Seahawks colors for a Super Bowl appearance and then for a few follow up flights.  Now it has been repainted and, when I shot it one weekend afternoon, it was close to being ready for delivery.

Cargo Conversion 737-700

Alaska’s cargo operation has used 737-400 freighters for a while.  They are now the launch customer for a cargo conversion of the 737-700.  I read about them taking delivery of the first aircraft but wasn’t too focused on seeing one.  I almost ignored this departure since SeaTac has a steady stream of Alaska 737s.  I did decide to shoot it though when something about it looked different.  Sure enough, it was the cargo conversion.  A lack of windows and the cargo markings set it apart.

The Sun is Setting! Too Late…

The Thai delivery flight I wrote about in this post went out in lovely light.  It was due to be followed by a Dreamlifter flight to Nagoya.  That is a long leg so means a heavy jet which should use a good amount of the runway.  The scheduled departure time meant it should be just before sundown.  They didn’t start on time, though, and the light was beginning to fade.  A bit of cloud on the horizon meant that sunset was going to be okay but the light was going to go before that.  Meanwhile, once the jet called up, they advised the tower that they needed to burn down a bit of fuel to get to the required takeoff weight.  Great, not what was needed!

By the time they were ready to go, the light was gone.  However, I had waited long enough so I figured I wasn’t giving up now (although I was now getting pretty cold!).  The ISO was being ramped up rapidly as I had to keep assessing the conditions while I waited and it got steadily darker.  Finally, they called for departure and lined up.  Looking up the runway over the ridge, I could see the jet approaching.  Something interesting was making the plane look very squashed!  Once it got over the ridge, they rotated and got airborne very close to me.  Everything was very flat but at least it was something different to shoot.

Cargojet Pairing

Freighter use is the great second chance for older airliners.  It is also a nice source of something different with the number of airlines shrinking as mergers and bankruptcies take their toll.  Cargojet is a Canadian freight operator that has a contract moving mail for Canada Post.  When I was at Vancouver, there were a couple of Cargojet aircraft on the ramp across from where we were.  One was a 767 and the other was a 757.  They were being loaded when I arrived and, as the evening light drew in, the first jet taxied.

It was getting pretty dark by the time they got airborne.  However, I was not complaining since I was able to get another airline in operation that I had not seen before.

Ruslan Before Sunset

My wife is a trooper.  We were coming back from a day out in the mountains and I saw an Antonov AN124 was coming in to Everett.  It was due to land shortly before sunset and sounded like something I wouldn’t want to miss.  We weren’t going to be able to get home in time to drop of Nancy so I could get back up to see it arrive.  She agreed to make a diversion to see the plane come in.  Not her thing but she was okay with being there.

The timing could not have been much better.  The light was nice, low and soft so the plane looked great as it trundled down the approach.  When it taxied back up to the north entrance to the Boeing ramp, the texture of the skin, which is normally lost in higher light, was a lot easier to see.  In fact, the finish looked pretty rough.  I guess the Volga Dnepr planes get a lot of use!

The Candid Really is Russian

The Antonov 124 is a reasonably regular visitor to the US when outsized cargo needs to be moved.  It is often commented on as being a Russian plane but, while one of the operators is a Russian company and some of the aircraft were assembled in Russia, the design and much of the production is actually Ukrainian.  Ilyushin, on the other hand, really is a Russian company.  Their IL-76 is also operated for freight services but it doesn’t show up anything like as frequently.  Consequently, when a Volga Dnepr example was scheduled in to SeaTac on a Friday afternoon, I was pretty annoyed I would miss it.  However, it ended up being seven hours late so arrived well after dark.

Departure the following day was going to be a practical proposition for me (and many others as it happened).  The weather was not going to be ideal with low cloud and rain but, when the visitor is a rarity, you don’t get to choose whether to go based on weather.  Fortunately, the departure was a lot closer to schedule than the arrival.  I drove past the cargo ramp and saw it parked up and all closed up so did wonder whether it would go on time but things were working well and they headed out.

This aircraft was the newer variant with the PS90 engines and takeoff performance was pretty good.  I had worried it would be low on the climb out and not in a good position to photograph but it climbed well and was in a good position to get a shot.  I had a big grin once it had gone as did the rest of the people waiting for it.

UPS’s New 747-8F Freighter

Boeing breathed a big, if perhaps temporary, sigh of relief when UPS signed up for a bunch of 747-8F freighters.  These jets are now starting to come off the line and, before they get allocated to the long runs across the oceans, I figured I would try and catch one at Everett.  Conditions were a little gloomier than I had hoped for but the timing was driven by luck, so I had to make do with what I could get.  The 747 may be disappearing from operators around the world but the freighters will continue for a long time and the 8F is the better of the most recent versions in my mind.  The extended upper deck of the 8I is a little too long for my tastes.  UPS colors are not bad either.  Hopefully I shall see more of them in service.

Cathay/Atlas/Polar – Whichever!

A 747-8 freighter came in to Portland while I was at the ANG base.  I could see it on FlightRadar24 before it landed, and it was listed with a Cathay Pacific flight number.  I was pleased to get a Cathay jet but, when it landed, it wasn’t in Cathay Colors.  Instead, it was in Polar Air Cargo colors.  I figured it was a subcontract operation by Polar.  However, when it taxied closer, on the side of the fuselage was the notice that it was operated by Atlas.  Atlas and Polar are related so I guess this shouldn’t be such a surprise.  Finding who actually operates any jet can be a bit of an exercise these days.

Where to Park Your 747?

Evergreen Aerospace Museum has a couple of 747s as part of the campus.  They are retired freighters from the now-defunct company that provided a lot of the backing for the museum when it was established.  One of the 747s is sitting out in front of the main museum building.  The other one is slightly more dramatic.  It is parked on top of a water park that is next to the museum.  The waterslides come from within the fuselage.  Getting the plane up there must have been quite something to watch.  Now it is an eye-catching way to let everyone know where the water park is.
