Still Some Convairs Around

Each evening sees a selection of Convairs making their arrivals at YVR.  The freight location is on the south side of the field so they usually come in on the south runway.  No good for where I was shooting from.  However, one of them made its arrival on the north side.  No idea why this was done but I’m certainly not complaining.  With the Honeywell Convair now retired, my chances of seeing flying examples are going to be pretty limited.

Kalitta Charter 727

Boeing 727s aren’t a total rarity but they are certainly not common and, when one showed up at Paine Field, it was worthy of a look.  Operated by Kalitta Charter, it was making a trip around the west.  It arrived at Paine in nice light and a flight plan was filed for a departure shortly afterwards.  This turned out to be a bit optimistic but I had plenty to do so I sat nearby awaiting the departure.  It ultimately came later in the day so the weather was great.

What wasn’t great was that I missed them calling up on the radio as I was busy with some work.  I happened to glance up and see the aircraft rotating in lovely light.  I grabbed the camera and tried to get a quick shot but the camera was not happy and I got a second of open shutter.  Nothing usable.  A quick reset and then I was able to get tail on shots as it climbed away.  To say I was annoyed is an understatement.  At least I saw it, even if I have no shots to share.

UPS Delivered from the Paintshop

A sunny and cold winter day provides nice light and an afternoon arrival of a jet at Paine Field from the paint facility in Portland was enough to tempt me out.  UPS is the primary recipient of 747-8F jets these days and it was another of their getting close to delivery.  It was approaching from the south so I was at the windsock with a few other locals.  They flew a touch and go before making a full stop landing so I was able to try two different positions to get the landing.  Conditions were really nice for getting a shot of a shiny new plane.

Random Dreamlifter Action

I have been gathering various shots of Boeing Dreamlifters over recent months and so figured I would just combine a bunch of them into a single post.  No overriding theme here and some conditions were way nice than others.  It is just a selection of shots of one of the more unusual looking aircraft around.  Hopefully, one day, I shall get to shoot the Airbus Belugas too.

Another FedEx 767

The only civilian 767s being built at the moment are for FedEx.  I posted one of them on test at Paine Field in this post.  I caught another one recently.  I got the departure early on as it disappeared into the clouds that were pretty low.  The return later had slightly better light.  The approach was terminated with a go-around resulting in some vortices streaming from the wing as they climbed out.  Dark skies make for an interesting background!

Direct to Ethiopia is Still Not That Heavy

Ethiopian Airlines has been taking delivery of some Boeing 777F freighters for their cargo operations.  One of the new jets was being readied for delivery while I was at Paine Field.  Operations were in a northerly direction so, from the terrace on top of the Future of Flight, we were going to get a good view.  I was hoping that a direct flight to Bole in Ethiopia would be sufficiently long to mean that the jet would be very heavy with fuel and would run long on take off giving us a good view of rotation.  However, while there was a lot of fuel on board, the lack of any other payload meant it still got off the ground pretty swiftly.  Still, it was a good view of the initial climb out.

Under the Ruslan

I have shot a lot of Antonov 124s at Everett since they are there on a regular basis.  One weekend recently, a Volga-Dnepr flight was scheduled in to SeaTac.  Shooting at SeaTac is a bit restricted in what you can achieve given the layout of the airport so I decided I would go for something a little different.  The heavy traffic usually comes in on the inside runway and there is a small park that puts you pretty much under the approach.  I thought this might be a slightly different position to shoot from.

The timing of the arrival was supposed to be later in the afternoon.  However, something about the routing meant the jet ended up getting in a bit later than I had expected.  Some lovely afternoon light had disappeared and had been replaced by a dull light which was also fading fast.  I was ramping up the ISO settings pretty quickly as the jet turned on the approach as it was disappearing by the minute.  Finally, the Ruslan appeared in view and I got some head on shots prior to shifting to a wider lens as the plane flew overhead.

Smoking the Ukrainian Way

The regular AN124 visitors to Everett continue.  This time of year can often bring northerly winds which means a departure up past the Future of Flight building.  Having a heavy Ruslan depart that way can mean a nice angle to get on rotation as well as the climb out which, while a bit backlit, makes for a good change.  I was happy with the takeoff but, as the jet climbed away to the north, the smoky combustion of the old D-18 engines was clear to see.  The further that they climbed out, the less the plane was obvious and the more the smoke trail was.  A bit of mixing from the trailing vortices helped as well.  A lot of the people around me were commenting on how dirty it was.

Tampa Prime Freighters

I had a short wait at Tampa for a flight home after a work trip.  The gate I was waiting at did not have a lot of traffic nearby.  Indeed, judging by the total lack of lines at security, maybe none of the gates at Tampa have a lot of traffic!  The view from our gate was towards a cargo ramp and there were two 767 freighters loading up.  They both finished loading and taxied off while I was there.  One was in Amazon Prime colors but the other was unmarked.  However, a quick search tells me it is also a Prime jet but I guess they haven’t got around to painting it yet.

Another FedEx Test Flight

Our visit to the Boeing Factory Tour at Everett with our visitors not only included the escapees from the hurricane that I covered here but also included the ongoing production test flying activities.  The 767 line is only producing freighters and tankers these days and the majority of the freighters have been going to FedEx.  This one undertook a test flight while we were there.  We saw it head out and, when it returned, it flew a missed approach before landing.
