What a Selection of Fungi

The colder, damper conditions that fall and winter bring have resulted in plenty of fungi appearing and that seems to have been reflected in the blog recently.  I seem to be adding pictures of fungi a lot.  This time they are from the areas around where I work.  At lunchtime I walk down the hill to get something to drink with my lunch and, with these guys springing up along the sidewalk and close by, it was time to get the phone out and capture some shots.  Modern phones are so useful in situations like this.

Getting Down to the Level of Fungi

Ever since I have had cameras with flip out screens, I have been far more likely to get down to the right level for a photo.  Lying on the ground was something I would only do in the right circumstances.  Walking through the arboretum with Nancy is not the right time to get grubby doing that.  However, now I can let the camera be low down and check the shots from a slightly more comfortable height.  This was the right thing to do when I was taking some shots of some mushrooms.  You get a totally different perspective from ground level!

Fungi in the Woods

The grounds of Bloedel Reserve included a lot of different types of growth.  Meadows and woodland, organized gardens and natural growth.  There is obviously a lot of moisture in some areas because the amount of fungal growth was substantial.  Some of the fungi were small growths while others seemed to be substantial organisms.  The majority were growing on tree trunks, whether still alive or lying dead on the ground.  While I find fungus interesting, there is a lurking thought in my mind from watching too many sci-fi movies that, as I get close, spores will burst forth and I shall be infected with some terrible disease.  Fortunately , this time I got away with it.  Clearly, there is no harm to watching to much TV as a kid.

Fungi to be With

wpid12337-AU0E3460.jpgWhile wandering through the woods at Armstrong Redwoods SNR, I saw the effect of the permanently damp climate. Fungi were everywhere. I wasn’t traveling with a tripod or a macro lens. The lens was less of an issue but getting shots in the darkness of the woods was a touch problematic. However, the fungi looked cool so it was worth a go.

wpid12329-AU0E3431.jpgI know nothing about them so have no idea what I was taking photos of. They could be common or rare. They may be toxic or tasty. None of this is known to me. However, they were interesting to look at and rather cool. That’s all that mattered to me!
